Social-Emotional Learning
Hero
Catherine Cook embeds social-emotional learning (SEL) into our mission, curriculum, practices, and policies. By centering our humanity and being valued and celebrated for the wholeness of what we experience and feel, we create an engaging learning environment for students and adults. SEL is more than a class or professional development course, it’s a system of values that informs how we structure our day, help each other learn from mistakes, care for each other through life events, and ensure that academic success can be thoughtfully achieved.
All faculty and staff at Catherine Cook participate in Responsive Classroom training, are invited to participate in our SEED Seminars, and learn from and with our DEI/Wellness team to ensure that SEL-informed approaches are supported throughout the community. Additional faculty and staff training includes:
-
The Institute for Social Emotional Learning (IFSEL)
-
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
-
Second Step SEL Learning Programs
Curriculum
In addition to SEL practices being infused into our daily life at Cook, Senior Kindergarten through 8th Grade students participate in an SEL course as part of their Enrichment classes. Taught by teachers trained specifically in SEL best practices and curriculum, SEL classes bring Cook’s ROARS values to life and help students understand the hows and whys of engaging intentionally within the community. This underlines our goal of continually growing as an inclusive community where everyone feels they belong. Centering SEL as a course that all students will engage with and grow in year after year means that students are equipped to bring their full selves to their other academic pursuits.
Teaching Our Students To Be ROARSy
Play is the context in which children develop the most significant social emotional growth, particularly in the areas of language/vocabulary, flexibility, resilience, and self-control. At Catherine Cook, we encourage our students to be ROARSy.
