It Started in a Shoe Factory...

That's right - the main school building at Catherine Cook began its life as the factory of the B&B Shoe Company. Purposefully redesigned for use as a school, our main building at 226 West Schiller is now the educational home to over 570 students. Three full floors plus a basement level house classrooms for students from preschool to eighth grade, a well-stocked library, science labs, art studios, music rooms, offices, multipurpose spaces, a cafeteria, and an art gallery. Our beautiful gymnasium is right next door and connected by a covered bridge walkway. The gym can be configured for full-court or half-court play in basketball and volleyball and be divided for simultaneous use by several groups. The cantilevered running track and rooftop playspace offer additional opportunities for physical activity and instruction. A retractable proscenium stage, state-of-the art lighting and sound equipment, and a catering kitchen give added flexibility to this valuable addition to the Catherine Cook facility, and the bleachers are packed during athletic competitions and at weekly all-school assemblies. Our commitment to "green" standards and sustainability -- through recycling, source reduction, use of earth-friendly products, and environmental education -- pervades our school culture and our approach to facilities management.
